Have you trained your brain today?

05/06/22

The brain is our most important organ, which allows us to interact with our environment. It regulates the psychological processes such as memory, attention, perception, emotion, language, thought, and learning.

Therefore, training our brain daily is essential, and there are different strategies to boost its performance.

Practicing new activities such as learning a new language, studying, or reading a book allows our brain to remain active and dynamic, which makes this new approach stimulate its function.

Another strategy is to exercise. Just as the body training to tone a muscle, in the same way doing physical activity stimulates our brain. When exercising, hormones such as dopamine, endorphin, oxytocin, and serotonin are released. They are responsible for sensations such as feeling pleasure or happiness. Hence exercise contributes not just to our physical health but also, it’s essential to our mental health.

Doing meditation and mindfulness is another way to keep the brain sharp. Seeking a state of consciousness and focusing our mind on the here and now facilitate reaching a complete state of concentration, stimulating attention, memory, perception, or thought abilities.

Establishing healthy relationships is essential to training the brain. We say that toxic relationships are not beneficial for our mental health. For that reason, it is vital to build networks that generate emotional stability. These relationships are not only about our close contacts with family, friends, or co-workers. It is when we consult information such as social networks. All extrinsic stimuli influence how our brain processes, internalize and subsequently extracts information.

Another way to keep our brain sharp is by doing puzzles, word searches, crosswords, sudoku, and other challenging activities that get the brain active. These hobbies are exceptionally functional for the elderly because they aim to train their brains in abilities such as memory. It is also a way to invest time in entertaining and stimulating activities.

Finally, having a healthy diet keeps our brain active and improves our internal processes such as memory and emotion regulation; thus, foods rich in vitamins or minerals help boost our mental skills.

Therefore, to train our brain, we can rely on different strategies and daily habits which aim at our physical and mental well-being. But is there a specific formula? My answer is negative; the important thing is finding the best strategy that helps each person to find their biopsychosocial well-being and balance.

Is Optimism Contagious?

15/08/21

One of my premises is being surrounded by positive people who look on the bright side of things and think that the glass is half full. I believe optimism is something contagious and if you feel the good vibes from the other person, you can face your life in the same way.

On the contrary, if you perceive negativity from the environment, I’m sure that you feel burned out and unenthusiastic, it’s like the other person will steal your motivation.

As I mentioned in another post, not everything is a bed of roses and excessive optimism isn’t healthy either, but it’s important to get into something and be full of the joys of spring. Life is very short and if you see everything desolate and in a bad way, rest assured that the things you want will be difficult for you to fulfill. Why do we need to go across the longer and tough way? That’s right, if you feel on the ropes and that you’re throwing in the towel at any time in your life, that’s ok because people have ups and downs; however, staying in that state for a long time or indefinitely, that’s the problem, we can give a shot to the opportunities, perhaps they can be a big break for us. The most important thing is not to miss them out since we can regret it.

Life is a permanent learning and it’s like a gear where everything that you do generates impact in others. It’s like the Butterfly Effect which idea is that small things can have non-linear impacts on a complex system, in other words and taking this quote from Fitchte, The Vocation of Man (1800) “You could not remove a single grain of sand from its place without thereby … changing something throughout all parts of the immeasurable whole.” Then our behavior impacts others and vice versa, we are in continuous transformation where we have the chance to decide which is the better way to move ahead and what kind of people is adequate for us.

Why Is It important To Take Risks In Our Lives?

07/08/21

An important person taught me that people can take calculated risks in their lives, which means that they can face situations as a learning process. For example, they can leave their comfort zone with the intention to obtain something better. Logically it’s important to evaluate the pros and cons of those experiences and make the decision without risking our own resources and rather having a profit or reward.

From my point of view, we have to take wise decisions and ignoring what other people think, we can lose opportunities just because we have fears, ideas, misconceptions or we give a lot of importance to others, however with the passing of time I’ve learned that a useful strategy it’s thinking in the worst-case scenario for each situation. That’s right, there are situations where we can feel churn or unnerved and we can avoid them or give up but why? Isn’t better to take the chance and do something where success might be a likely outcome?

Many times, the previous experiences where the result hasn’t been the best paralyzes us on similar situations in the future due to us generalizing, but remember that not all experiences are equal.

My advice is to grab opportunities but without throwing caution to the wind, I believe the ideal state it’s a balance between emotion and reason, remember that life is what you make it without acting wild and avoiding putting all eggs in one basket.

How To Overcome Negative Answers?

27/06/21

Have you found situations where the response that you get is “no”? How many times you’ve had face circumstances where things don’t go on your way? Or you have to change your mind and find a plan B.

People are in a constant search of goals and self-realization as it is posed in Abraham Maslow Hierarchy of Needs Theory: “In his quest to understand human motivation and the pursuit of happiness, he formulated a list of basic human needs that had to be fulfilled for maximum psychological health. Through his interviews and studies, he came to categorize a hierarchical list of needs that need to be fulfilled for increasing life satisfaction” (https://www.pursuit-of-happiness.org/history-of-happiness/abraham-maslow). Those needs are Physiological needs, Safety needs, Love and Belonging, Esteem, and Self-actualization.

Thus, people in their different states are searching to fulfill their aims, nevertheless, they don’t always achieve them easily. They need to deal with those challenges, frustrations, and negative answers that make their lives more complex and tough. For example, getting a job, walking into the University, traveling to a different country, or finding the love of our lives, they’re different circumstances that we don’t always get on the first attempt.

When we find these situations, people can take them as a challenge in their lives and search for different strategies or resources to cope with them; however, other people prefer to give up their objectives, and desisting due to they could be perceiving that this is the best and an easy way to face them.

Tolerance to frustration is a great ally in these cases and reinvention capacity too. Many times, we’re waiting for that important answer from the job that we want, the acceptance to study at a university, or other situations where the response isn’t that we wanted and all of our projects and perspectives fall like a house of cards because we couldn’t accomplish that goal as we wanted to do. However, this doesn’t mean that everything is lost, you just have to wait or do a different maneuver to get to your goal.

Another point is “resilience” which “can be defined as reduced vulnerability to environmental risk experiences, the overcoming of stress or adversity, or a relatively good outcome despite the risk experiences” (Michael Rutter), In other words, when one door closes, another opens or every cloud has a silver lining. Many sayings have a relation with these situations and can give us motivation in those cases, then our role is to know how to play this game where we can go back and forth or face an intricate set of obstacles which we can find on our way but finally, they could become in opportunities in the future.

Perseverance, optimism, and constancy are elements that we can use in these situations and another important point is being surrounded by people who contribute to you, positive people who can give you a hand in those difficult times. Sadly, some people rejoice at our failures and when we have these types of people in our environment, the best thing is to get away from them. Toxic relationships aren’t healthy.

Not everything is lost, maybe we have to take more steps or walking across the long way but it doesn’t mean that we have a flop, contrary to this we’ve gained many lessons and we can learn from this the path that we decide to cross. Every day we can find new experiences, many times it’s good to think out of the box and take risks and never give up our purposes in the first attempt, we will always find solutions to hurdle those difficulties.

I know we can feel frustration, disappointment and rage since things aren’t always easy and we can’t avoid struggling with them, but the most important thing is to overcome those negative answers and belief in ourselves and our capacities to achieve our goals because after a storm comes a calm.

The Pursuit Of Happiness

09/04/21

The satisfaction a person feels when they reach a goal is a sensation which it’s hard to explain but it’s the reward after facing barriers and obstacles that they can find in their way. I remember the last scene of the movie “The pursuit of Happiness” where the protagonist characterized by Will Smith achieved his goal. After many failures and frustrations, some doors closed and losses like his job, relationship, home and stability, he could face those difficulties using different resources, perseverance and the desire to be a better man.

How many times have you been feeling like that guy? Sometimes we can lose hope and the wish to pursue that dream, things don’t go our way and we just need to roll with the punches. I know, this is a huge challenge and mostly these days, where we’re living a period totally unthinkable. The pandemic has unchained mental diseases, people have suffered from different disorders and behaviors like anxiety, increased levels of alcohol and drugs use for mentioning some of them. There are people more vulnerable than others on manifesting different conducts and in those cases it’s really important that the person has support networks. The ideal thing is that the person could be resilient like Chris Gardner, the main character of the movie that I mentioned above and who live difficult times but he could deal with them. However, not everyone counts with those skills and mental power therefore it’s important having into account social networks and other external helps. The success is having a balance between our thoughts and actions.

I’m aware that people have to face different problems and I can’t underestimate their issues, in my country there is this saying: “No one knows the thirst with which other drinks”. We have to be empathetic and try to put ourselves in the position of someone because life takes many turns and if we can help someone and give support, it’s welcome.

I would like to give you an advice in these difficult times. I’ve had moments where I would have liked to throw in the towel. The harshest situation which I had to deal was when my mom passed away in December 2019 and two months later the pandemic started, besides along my husband we had to face issues as immigrants which were not easy, then I had times of ups and downs; actually, right now not everything is perfect but I can tell you that things have improved a bunch and the way I chose as strategy was to reinvent myself. So, people can see themselves on the verge of the misfortune and one choice is to run away and falter but the other option is to cope with those difficult times, there is nothing more rewarding than feeling an immense satisfaction when managing to overcome an obstacle, it’s like Chris Gardner in the ending scene where he feels an extreme and powerful happiness after having struggled intensely.

Then, my buddies, I know life has challenges and we have to deal with hurdles but if you want to reach the peak of the mountain you have to prepare for that.  Finally, I want to wrap up with this quote by As Alistair MacLeond that I found totally inspiring: “No one has ever said that life is to be easy. Only that it’s to be lived”. What do you think? I would like to read you in the comments.

Collective Censorship?

14/03/21

The world is in constant change and transformation and at the same time the ideologies to perceive it change too.

Lately I’ve felt surprised and perhaps upset about some news focused on censoring some Tv shows and movies because those are a bad influence and promote negative messages. That is the case of Pepe Le Pew a character from the Warner Brothers which was canceled because promoted rape culture”(https://www.skynews.com.au/details/_6239335745001) or Speedy Gonzalez due to “whose friends helped popularize the corrosive stereotype of the drunk and lethargic Mexicans.” (https://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/pepe-le-pew-cancel-culture).

There are other cartoons like Peter Pan or Dumbo which were canceled too. In Dumbo, for instance, “the crows and musical number pay homage to racist minstrel shows, where white performers with blackened faces and tattered clothing imitated and ridiculed enslaved Africans on Southern plantations.

While in Peter Pan, the “film portrays Native people in a stereotypical manner that reflects neither the diversity of Native peoples nor their authentic cultural traditions.” (https://www.newsweek.com/disney-plus-dumbo-peter-pan-restrictions-spark-conservative-outrage-1575372)

About all that situation, I believe it’s a delicate issue that can have two-coin sides. One side shows the new generations which are more critical and try to avoid behaviors like xenophobia, racism, chauvinism, sexism, etc. Promoting constant equality and respect for their rights. On the other hand, those Tv shows were recorded many years ago and many of us grew up watching them and nowadays we don’t have aggressive, violent or discriminatory behaviors because many of us had the support of someone at moment to see them or simply the messages of these shows were not so negative to introject offensive behaviors.

I really wish for a better world where the rights are respected, and we have equality and wellness but I believe the way to cancel and censorship every program isn’t the way. Every day I hear that a new program was censored or the story of a movie will be changed but at the same time as a paradox new songs or movies are released an many of them have negative and inappropriate messages but contrary to all prognostics, they have many followers.

Then, we’re living in a world of contrasts and divergences. I respect the different points of view but to cut with everything that was part of my childhood dramatically and drastically is disappointing, overwhelming and inconceivable. I believe that not just a TV Show shape your personality there are many other factors that influence us like family, school, friends, community and your own system of values and beliefs. As I said I don’t want to generate controversy. This writing is just to give my opinion about the way that the new generation is facing their reality.  If you have an opinion about this topic, I would like to know about it.

What Do You Often Do To Keep On Your Motivation Or Energy?

21/02/21

People daily are back and forth with their routine, and they feel that have a lot on their plate. We’re immersed in different contexts (Home, School, Work, etc) where we need to respond in all of them. Also, we assume a specific role depending on the activities with our family, friends or colleagues.

Thus, the obligation that we have in those spaces many times generate that we spend energy and at the same time motivation to fulfill our purposes. So, this week I read a question that has a relation with all of this, and I found it interesting to answer and share it: What do you often do to keep on your motivation or energy?

I know there isn’t a special recipe and from my perspective to have motivation is an individual process, which just depends on each one. In my case, one of the resources that work for me is to listen to music, turn on the TV or laptop and let the environment is filled by different genres and rhythms. It’s a cool way to feel a good vibe in the atmosphere. Sometimes singing or dancing with a song gives me energy and motivation too, and it’s like to be with a group of fellas, feeling company or having my own party at home.

Another activity which helps me it’s doing exercise. I like to ride my static bike along a nice song in the background, I let my mind fly while I’m doing my routine. At another time going to the gym and doing group classes like: Step, Aerobics, Zumba or Pilates is another option to keep my motivation.  For people who like meditation, yoga and other disciplines they are a good choice too.

Walking or jogging can be another way, mostly if you have the alternative to change the environment and go to the park or other enjoyable place where it changes the monotony of being in curfew.

If you like to cook, then this activity can help you be full of beans. Learning a new recipe or eating a scrumptious meal it’s a great option to be jazzed.

Reading a book, drawing, writing or meeting with folks can be other choices.

According to the question, there are many answers because the way to feel motivated and with energy just depends on each person and their experiences, hobbies and personality. Besides, the activities that I shared above can work for me, but perhaps in your case, you need to do others like drinking a big cup of coffee or an energy beverage just to mention some of them.

The key is that you know the stimuli which help you to keep your energy and motivation, and then make the most out of them. If you feel knackered, lacking of energy and demotivated this can generate other consequences as mental and physical illness, so be careful with your health. Just so you know “Everything is energy, your thought begins it, your emotion amplifies it, and your action increases the momentum.” (Unknown)

The Darkest Hour Is Just Before The Dawn

15/02/21

Today I’m going to start my writing with a quote that caught my attention: At all times in life, you either affect people with your greatness or you will infect them with your mediocrity. (Li Chun Young).

Certainly, not all days are equal and things don’t go our way, we can have goals that can be late more than we expect and it can bring frustration and bad thoughts. However, I fully trust that our mindset and the way that we face every day have to do with our results. There are many external factors which we can’t control, but on the other hand we have the power to drive our thoughts and actions. For example, when we start a new week and it’s Monday, we can have the perception that starting a new week with the same routine after a long weekend is boring and demotivating, but the other side of the coin can show us it’s a new begin with other opportunities and possibilities to learn, create or do something new.

My mom used to tell me that the words have power and I completely agree. If you go outside to the office, school or wherever you need to go and each step that you do it’s a complaint and the words that you use are with a negative vibe surely, you’ll perceive the world in the same way. At the same time that attitude can generate a bad atmosphere with the people who are close to you and the worst is it affects your own results.

From my experience, I’ve had difficult times where the only thoughts were negatives and it had driven me to have low confidence in myself and the accomplishments that I wanted. The only way to keep going is changing the chip of my mind and try to think in all the best of myself and the resources and skills that I have. However, all extremes are bad because I remember a chapter of the Tv Series Friends where there is a character with excessive optimism and enthusiasm. That situation turns uncomfortable for him and the people who are around him because his positivism is so extreme. I’m sharing the link with part of this episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_INzlg-fQlI

Regarding that Friends chapter and other similar situations, I always say that we need a balance in our life. I know not everything is a bed of roses, we have trials and tribulations and there are people who have more challenges than others but I’m completely convinced in the mind’s power and the way to try the good things of life and not to be a sad sack every moment.

I just listened to Podcast number 38 of the course that I’m doing: Real Life English and I felt really identified with that pool of knowledge about this topic and Ethan said something that I liked: “If you’re learning a language, you can have a really negative attitude like I’m never going to get fluent, or I’m just making mistakes all the time or you know my English really sucks. Or you can be really positive you can say ‘Hey I’m going to keep making a bunch of mistakes, but I’m correcting them, I’m getting better.” That is the case when learning a language but everything in life is the same, you can have ups and downs and you’re the only person that has the answer to overcome those situations and also, you can infect other people with your good vibe and greatness and encourage them too. In my case, I try to motivate people sharing my experiences and writing these posts as a way of mutual learning.

So, I hope this new post would be a support for you and let me know your comments and experiences about it. Have a fantastic day!

No Time, No Money

24/01/21

When people want to reach a goal or they have the expectations to do something important many times I’ve heard that the main pretext to achieve something is the lack of time or money. Actually, from my experience I’ve had to wait or postpone something for those two reasons and I know, not always it’s the precise time to do something that we want.

However, those words: time and money, can be a barrier and a mental pretext that humans create because in many occasions to leave the comfort zone is a risk that many of us want to avoid. We want to be comfortable with a known environment, the stimuli and resources and doing a step forward is a challenge because we don’t know if to take that risk will be the best decision but, in my country, we say: “El que no arriesga un huevo no gana un pollo” or in other words “Nothing ventured, nothing gained”. In many situations to face the unknown can have awards in the future.

Regarding the absence of time, it is very important to organize it and at the same time to have strategies to optimize and take advantage of every moment. Procrastination is a bad habit as the laziness or invention of excuses. Sometimes it is because we don’t know the tools to organize our schedule but there are many options which can help you to be productive and the use of them depends on if you’re a conventional or practical person. Some of those can be: Google calendar, agendas, alarms, time planners or reminders. Here is an interesting article about this topic and I think it’s very useful as a complement of this important theme: https://www.spica.com/blog/best-time-management-tools

About the money, this is an important point and more now that we’re in a time of pandemic many companies went bankrupt or they are dealing with the economy and many people have had to change their jobs, many of them were laid off and therefore the financial situation can be a huge problem. Nevertheless, in many cases the lack of money is because people don’t have financial culture and they prefer to live in the moment- the here and now, forgetting their future and everything that involves retirement and having a livelihood for tomorrow. In many situations people spend more money than they have and the credit system is the way to deal with that but sometimes this issue becomes a nightmare where people are living to pay debts and this failure obscures the possibility of a promising future. Thus, my advice to go swimmingly financially is using some strategies like: saving money, spending less money than you earn, investing or creating simple and achievable business that help you to earn some extra income.

So, the absence of money and time have a common element which is organization and discipline, where people can use some resources and habits which can help them to fulfill their goal. The most important thing is if you have an objective you should have the mindset and commitment to do it. I always write about the importance of our mindset and attitude but those elements move people. I am completely aware about the external factors and stimuli which influence our days and decisions but the message that I want to leave in this writing is when something depends on your actions and way to see the world then try to be assertive and use your time and money in the best way.

How To Build Auto Motivation?

17/01/21

These days when we’ve been suffering from the inclemency and consequences from a ruthless virus and we’ve changed our perspective to see the world and also our projects, goals and dreams have had to wait or maybe we’ve had to take a step forward and change our mindset and perception of everything. Then, I ask myself: How are people facing this situation? Every individual is different and there are extrovert and introvert people. How people who used to do activities every day, socializing and interacting with others, suddenly they had to change their routines and follow the guideline “stay at home” and “curfew”?

Probably for some people to deal with this reality have been easier than others. However, it’s clear that the monotony and routine trigger different behaviors and on some occasion mental diseases and disorders.

I have a friend who had Covid-19 and days after he developed bipolar disorder (he had a history of this disease). I don’t know if that was a consequence of the lockdown that he had to face or just a coincidence. Luckily, he’s now in rehabilitation and recovering slowly.

Fortunately, every cloud has a silver lining and just as there are wayward people whose actions go against the laws and rules on the other hand many people are creating strategies to motivate each other in a healthy way. For example, this week I watched a catchy video on YouTube called “The Wellerman” which is a sea shanty “a type of work song that was once commonly sung to accompany rhythmical labor on board large merchant sailing vessels”. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_shanty.

“Nathan Evans, a 26-year-old postman and aspiring musician from outside Glasgow, is credited with having started the “ShantyTok” trend with his rousing rendition of Wellerman, posted in late December (…)

In the US and UK, Wellerman’s surprise popularity is being held up as evidence of the mental toll of months-long lockdown (…)  the Covid lockdowns have put millions of young [people] into a similar situation that young whalers were in 200 years ago: confined for the foreseeable future, often far from home, running out of necessities, always in risk of sudden death, and spending long hours with no communal activities to cheer them up.” https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jan/15/shantytok-how-a-19th-century-seafaring-epic-inspired-a-covid-generation

This hopeful song shows me another face in how people cope with their problems. This is the link to this addictive song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UgsurPg9Ckw

As well as that catchy song I have seen other resources which help people to be aware of their emotions and address the current crisis using some alternatives through activities like: dancing, painting, singing, cooking, doing exercise, reading or assisting to virtual courses to mentioned some of them. Personally, I have developed some habits like reading, cooking and doing exercise. I love to do spinning on my static bike, I just play a song which has flow and I do my routines, when I’m on my bike my mind flies and my endorphins are released. Of course, all of this depends on each person’s preferences, resources and interests.

My fellas, I recommend you to use your skills and resources, we are all different for sure, but using communication and talking about your feelings and thoughts. If you have access to the Internet take advantage of social media, there are value information that can help you to deal with this difficult period and finally, I always write about this point but I prefer to repeat it over and over again: use your social networks i.e., family, friends, coworkers, fellows, community, etc.

Last but not least, I want to dedicate this post to my friend AD and all people who had lost hope sometime in this difficult time. Well, I wrap up this write for today. Have a good one.
