Choosing a career isn’t an easy decision because the person will be linked to this profession their entire life.
The most important path for those students is choosing their career by themselves. It’s a big mistake by parents to generate pressure on their children and force them to study something that they don’t like. In those cases, frustration and demotivation appear as response to that pressure and desertion and abandonment of their studies is the result.
Another point is to state updates about the labor market and answer the question Which area has more opportunities? According to Forbes Magazine which at the same time was based on information from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics the jobs are expected to grow in demand in the near future are: Mathematicians, Software Developers/Applications, Physical Therapist Assistants, Statisticians, Nurse Practitioners, Personal Care Aides, Physician Assistants, Home Health Aides, Wind Turbine Service Technicians and Solar Photovoltaic Installers. Obviously, that list of jobs might be changed according to the market needs. So, it’s important to read and investigate it.
On the other hand, the skills are essential to take that decision. For example, the theory of multiple intelligences explains that each individual has specific skills and capacities, some of them develop over time and others can be innate. The point is answering the question What am I good for?
Lastly, another strategy is to talk with people that have experience in the career that you are interested in and those persons can tell you about the pros and cons. It’s useful to learn about the experience of others. By the way, you can consult with a psychologist who has experience in professional orientation. They have some instruments and assessments which can help you too.
To conclude, choosing studies is a momentous decision and that depends on multiple factors but the most important is feeling satisfied with that decision and taking advantage of it.
